Zoë Gilby Biography
Zoë Gilby grew up in the North East of England in a household bursting with jazz. Her father Mike Gilby enjoyed a successful career spanning 40years as a jazz trumpet player and arranger. It was not uncommon to see a young toddler Zoë at her father’s concerts. He still remains her number one influence. The jazz bug was passed on through the blood.

On leaving school she studied drama and dance but realising her talent and desire to be a singer, Zoë then studied music at Newcastle College for two years.

Her professional career started by being the lead vocalist in a social club band. Touring around the North East for 18 months but it was her 21st birthday present that changed her life forever. The Fionna Duncan Vocal Jazz Workshop in Glasgow was the weekend Zoë will never forget
Fionna and the other tutors gave me the key to the door that I wanted to open”

After performing as part of the Glasgow Jazz Festival Zoë returned to Newcastle inspired and emotional from her experience. She left the north east social club scene and embarked on her journey with jazz.

Listening to the greats of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McRae from an early age gave Zoë the building ground to becoming the vocalist she is today. Working for the next few years with the young local jazz musicians, Zoë built up a repertoire of over 100 standards and performed in local restaurants, bars, functions and in several local festivals including the Newcastle Jazz Festival.

Thanks to close family friend trombone player Mike Carton, Zoë was booked to be a featured vocalist with a six piece band in the 2006 Cork Jazz Festival. As well as performing twice a day at the festival Zoë had a sit in with Northern Irish saxophonist legend Gay McIntyre and his quartet. After only singing one song “Love For Sale” Gay invited Zoë to be the vocalist with his quartet at the 2007 Derry Jazz Festival.

Another important meeting occurred that weekend with the drummer from Gay McIntyre’s quartet. That was with the arranger Tony Faulkner. Tony was also blown away with Zoë’s performance. They kept in contact and Tony helped Zoë plan her debut album. Due her fathers ill health Tony took on the role of arranger for the album. Four months later she was in the recording studio for the very first time and recorded the whole 12 track album, live, in just two days! From that weekend Zoë made good friends with saxophonist giant Russell van den Berg.

The 2007 Derry Jazz Festival was a huge success and Zoë had the wonderful opportunity to meet and perform twice with guitarist great Louis Stewart. On stage with Gay McIntyre and Louis Stewart was so natural for Zoë that Louis even requested a duet with her.

Zoë is now currently promoting her debut album “Now That I am Real”

“I wanted a powerful, honest title for this album and I found inspiration from the Charles Mingus biography Myself When I am Real written by Gene Santoro”

“It reflects a particular stage in my life and my music at the moment”

This excellent album is now available by mail £12.50 inc postage - . Her album has received radio play from Spain, Australia, U.S.A, Belgium, France and from BBC Radio Ulster in Northern Ireland. In January 2008 Courtney Pine plays track “West Coast Blues” for his BBC Radio 2 Jazz Crusade Unsigned. Zoë continues to further her career after a successful performance at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London.

CD Recording: Now That I Am Real
Inspiration

I wanted a powerful, honest title for this album and I found inspiration from the Charles Mingus biography, 'Myself When I am Real' written by Gene Santoro. It reflects where I am right now with myself and music. The journey in music always feels like it's a new beginning for me. Now that I am truly spreading my wings.
“I would like to thank:-
My father Mike Gilby. His influence has sparked this fire and the passion he has passed on will keep it burning.
Tony Faulkner for believing in me and putting the magic into this album.
Mike Carton for his support, encouragement and for flying over from New York to take part in this recording.
The musicians who gave their all on this album.
My mother, Hilary, for her unconditional love.
Special thanks to June and Bill."

Reviews:-
AllAboutJazz Revue - By Antonio J. del Palacio
Zoë Gilby is a young vocalist making her recording debut with Now that I am real. Following her father's footsteps into jazz--British trumpeter/arranger Mike Gilby--Gilby possesses a mezzo-soprano voice with a wide vocal range, warm timbre and clear diction, which she uses skilfully to unveil her moods throughout the album. Gilby collaborates with drummer/arranger/conductor Tony Faulkner, a veteran of the British jazz scene. A self-declared Ellingtonian, Faulkner has composed and arranged over a hundred tunes recorded for the BBC's Jazz Club program, where he's conducted his own or the BBC's Orchestra. He's played with significant jazz artists including Thad Jones, Nat Adderley, Art Farmer and Al Cohn.  Gilby's voice and style are distinctive on this setlist consisting largely of standards, with many of them rarely performed by other jazz vocalese divas. Faulkner's clever arrangements bring a fresh and original slant to the material, as well as encouraging strong performances from the musicians, pushing the envelope and making this more than simply a lovely debut.
The disc begins with Bobbie Gentry's classic country hit "Ode to Billy Joe," a tune previously given the jazz treatment by Patricia Barber on Modern Cool (Premonition, 1994) and Oscar Peterson on Motions & Emotions (Verve, 1990). It opens with a vigorous and hard-bopping rhythmic statement by the horns, providing the basis for a tempo that's followed contrapuntally by the drums and percussion. Gilby swings the lyrics and beat with an almost harsh tone, while saxophonist Russell van der Berg responds, adding a spicy dissonant touch.
On an album filled with high points Wes Montgomery's "West Coast Blues" stands out. A duet between Gilby and bassist Russell Pearson, the singer's syncopation approaches scat while Pearson delivers one of his best performances of the set.
Gilby's chameleonic ability to adapt her voice to a song's requirements makes Now That I Am Real a surprising debut. It's clear that she's already found her own voice, bringing a unique perspective to the material that distinguishes her from classic singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae and Billie Holiday, as well as her contemporary peers.
