Extra-Feature
-
Guest Performance by the Lord Williams' Jazz Ensemble.
- as a warm up to our main Guitar Duo event the ensemble played confidently despite the absence of their MD Roger Simmonds giving some proud parents an opportunity to see them strut their stuff.  Hopefully they will continue to support us and listen to the flow of  masters passing through this local showcase venue.

Eddie the Editor -
A very special Christmas Celebration Recital by two superb Guitarists at the peak of their powers.  They featured a series of standards and surprise transcriptions of seasonal standards, carols alongside a selection of
music from South America - Tangos, Bossa Nova  (Antonio Carlos Jobim and Egberto Gismonti), Also arrangements from Miles Davis Chic Corea, Joni Mitchell, the Beatles and Norah Jones.  The performance was recorded 'warts and all' for aural posterity and future therapy.
This concert had a very broad spectrum of appeal to music fans.  Enough to surprise even those who thought they didn't like jazz - it proves it has many facets to its exterior!

Luis & Pete's Joint Album:-
The Play of Light ,(33 Records,33JAZZ082) running time: 45:43
Album of less known standards and pieces by contemporary writers including works by Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Sid Jacobs, Egberto Gismonti, John Coltrane, Steve Swallow.
Listen to Extracts
This album came about as a result of two years regular gigging together. During that time they had built up a repertoire of guitar duos which ranged from tangos to works by the likes of Chick Corea, Egberto Gismonti and Joni Mitchell.  They decided to record arrangements by such artists rather than putting together a set of originals. What they have captured much of the essence of our live performances. For six of the tunes, Pete used Wesley Brant's wonderful acoustic guitar, which makes for an ideal contrast to Luis's jazz guitar.

“Pete Oxley and Luis D’Agostino are both seasoned practitioners in the art of jazz guitar, and combine in a delightful and sweetly executed duet on this relaxed but intricate session... their respective approaches to melody, harmony and rhythm dovetail beautifully and their deft interplay often seems to merge into what almost becomes a single instrument. They choose a pleasing mixture of standards, Latin tunes and contemporary compositions, and play all of them in elegant, unhurried (even at swift tempos, as on Egberto Gismonti’s ‘Loro’) and enjoyable fashion.” ~ Jazzwise"

..the whole album has a chamber music feel about it: music by friends for friends. These two clearly love playing together. The sheer joy of making music together shines out, particularly from the upbeat numbers. It's also very obvious that they've played together a lot; the unison passages are impeccably precise, the accompanist always highly responsive to the soloist's change of pace and dynamics." ~

Pete Oxley
- Guitarist and Jazz Composer -
Pete was initially captivated by the works of Egberto Gismonti, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock and John Scofield, influences which he would still cite as relevant today.  Pete was offered a place at the Leeds Jazz College in 1981. He accepted - somehow he managed to respectably graduate from the Leeds Jazz College and moved to Paris to begin a glorious unfettered career.  It was in Paris that Pete began gigging intensely, backing singers, generally freelancing and working on his own musical projects.

In 1999, in partnership with drummer Mark Doffman and bassist Raph Mizraki, Pete set up Oxford's Contemporary Jazz club 'The Spin'. These three formed the house-band, with whom scores of the UK's jazz glitterati have now performed (Gilad Atzmon, Tim Whitehead, John Parricelli, Roger Beaujolais, Mornington Lockett, John Etheridge, Ben Castle, Mark Lockheart etc. etc...)   In 2002, Pete recorded the duo album The Play Of Light with Argentinean guitar virtuoso Luis D'Agostino:-
